Julie Cohn’s Watercolor, Oils, Cartooning and Design Classes

JULIE COHN'S WEEKLY AND MONTHLY CLASSES IN BERKELEY

Monday Classes
Design Essentials: Mondays 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm,
October 11, 2010 – September 12, 2011. Once a Month for 12 Months
This class encourages exploration of all two dimensional media using a great book about designing on a two dimensional surface: The Artist’s Design: Probing the Hidden Order by Marie MacDonnell Roberts. Students bring in a painting each month for critique (starting 2nd meeting), and learn about design through lecture and slides. See the world in an entirely new way!
This class will meet every second Monday of the month starting October 11.
The exceptions to the second Monday will be November 15 and February 7.
Fee is $240.00 for each six month period. Full payment of $480.00 for the year is due by the third meeting in December. If you know in advance which dates you cannot make, you may omit payment for up to two classes ($80.00)

Tuesday Classes
Open Program: Tuesdays 9:30 am to 12:30 pm   Weekly
Let me know which Tuesdays you can come (24 hour notice for coming to class or canceling). Enjoy and open program of non-toxic media such as watercolor, cartooning and water-soluble oils (thin oil paints that clean with soap and water). I offer demonstrations of new projects and demonstrations based on student interest.
Fee is $40.00 per class of four or more. Classes usually range from four to eight people. Students pay in advance either $150.00 or $200.00 and come to class when they can.

Tuesday Classes
Through the Eyes of Masters Design Class:
Tuesdays for 12 Months 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm
October 19 2010 – September 20, 2011   Once a Month
This is a design class for all artists working in two dimensional media. Each new group chooses 12 master artists to study during this year long course. I critique student artwork each month (starting second meeting), show a slide presentation and teach about the master artist chosen for that month. We discuss master artists based on the chronological order of their lives and artwork. Students learn from the master artist and use the inspiration of his/her style or philosophy when creating their own artwork.
This class will meet every third Tuesday of the month starting October 19. The exceptions to the third Tuesday will be December 7 and April 12.
Fee is $240.00 for each six month period. Full payment of $480.00 for the year is due by the third meeting in December. If you know in advance of the first or second payment which dates you cannot make the following months, you may omit payment for up to two classes ($80.00).

Wednesday Classes
Beginning Watercolor:
Wednesdays 11 am to 1 pm for 6 sessions -  
October 6, 13, 27 and November 3, 10 and 24.   Weekly
Learn all the basics of watercolor in a relaxed supportive environment. We focus on many subjects and include drawing lessons with watercolor projects. Get a handle on composition, color and shape making for real and imagined forms.
Fee ranges from $35.00 to $40.00 per class, depending on the number of people attending.

Thursday Classes
Plein  Air Watercolor and Travel Sketching:
Thursdays 9:30 am to 12:30 pm –
August 26, September 16, 30 & October 14.  Every Two Weeks
Plein  Air Watercolor and Travel Sketching. Bring watercolors, ink and sketchbooks. Enjoy nature while the weather is beautiful and loosen up your sketching and painting. We meet on location in Berkeley and in the East Bay.

After October 14 we will meet indoors two Thursdays per month and focus on drawing, shading, and watercolor themes chosen by the class.
Fee is $40. per class

Thursday Classes
Drawing Essentials:
Thursdays 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Four Classes – October 7 and 21, November 11 and 18. (1st and 3rd Thursday of the month except for November 11).  
Every Two Weeks
Learn drawing basics for still life, landscape, portrait and figure. Master all the essentials for drawing in a direct and confident manner.
Fee is $40.00 per class, $150.00 for a complete session of four classes

Thursday Classes
Perspective Drawing for Still Life, Landscape, Portrait and Figure:
Thursdays 9:30 am to 12:30 pm Four Classes – January 20, February 3 and 17, March 3 (1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month).   Every Two Weeks
Build onto the skill level you developed during my Drawing Essentials Class or build onto your previous drawing experience. Learn how to apply one and two point perspective, as well as aerial and diminutive perspective to still life, landscape, portraits and figures.
Fee is $40.00 per class, $150.00 for a complete session of four classes

Friday Classes
Advanced Beginners and Beyond Watercolor Class:
Fridays 2:30 pm to 5 pm September 24 to October 29.  Six Sessions
We explore a different subject every six weeks, delving into a variety of styles and techniques. Critiques are lively and students are very supportive of each other. Be ready to stretch!
Fee is $240.00. Should you know in advance of the class that you can’t make one or two sessions, pay $200.00 or $160.00

Saturday Classes
Open Program:
Saturdays 1 pm to 5 pm. Next class is September 25.  Once a Month
Enjoy an open program of non-toxic media such as watercolor, cartooning and water-soluble oils (thin oil paints that clean with soap and water). I offer demonstrations of new projects and demonstrations based on student interest. Relax and let go on the weekend!
Fee is $55.00 per class

Five Day Abstract Workshop:
Paint for five consecutive days!
Class will meet from 9 am to 1 pm every day from Monday, January 24
to Friday, January 28.  On Thursday I would enjoy having lunch with all
of you at a restaurant nearby after class.
You will paint abstract paintings on a small and medium scale. “Abstract” means “to take from reality.” Use your own photos of landscapes as inspiration, paint from still life objects set up in class, and delve into your imagination! Learn how to abstract your paintings in creative and exciting ways. We will also paint one non-objective painting (no hint of reality at all!)
Fee is $275.00

France Workshop:
Painting plein air (in the fresh air) — scheduled for 2012.

Julie Cohn, teacher in the Bay Area for over 25 years, has studied with numerous masters of watercolors and oils. She earned her degrees in Fine Art, with a minor in Art History, at University of California, Berkeley, and College of the Arts, Oakland, California.
